I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to attend a workshop on mindfulness: “The power of Being Present” at my practicum school, “Samuel Brighouse Elementary” in Richmond BC. At the workshop, I learned that mindfulness is “the rich soil and social emotional learning is the tree growing from the soil, within the forest” (Chow & Medenwaldt 2016) and many educators in Richmond are using it in their classrooms through the "Mindup Curriculum".  Mindfulness is closely related to social-emotional learning. It offers students with a “full sensory involvement and [helps students maintain their] attention to [their] environment (Miller 2013). Some ways that mindfulness can help students is through "fostering relationship building skills, self-regulation and reducing stress” (Chow & Medenwaldt 2016); it may also help reduce “depression and anxiety”(Miller 2013) among students.

The MindUp Curriculum: This was developed by the Hawn Foundation and it is      an excellent resource for teachers; it is "a catalyst for Social-Emotional learning" ( Scholastic Inc 2017).
