Today it is great to see that British Columbia’s new curriculum recognizes that learning should go beyond academics. It focuses on education that supports the “development of each individual by involving mind, body, intelligence, sensitivity, aesthetic sense, personal responsibility and spiritual values”. Currently, British Columbia’s new curriculum focuses on “learning to be”; this is a perspective that supports a “foundation for lifelong learning” (Kaser & Halbert 2015). Additionally, the new curriculum has a section that addresses “personal and social” competencies. It defines “personal and social competencies” as a “set of abilities that relate to a student’s identity in the world, both as individuals and as members of their community and society (Kaser & Halbert 2015).” It also defines the competencies as “the abilities students need to thrive as individuals, to understand and care about themselves, and others [in order] to find and achieve their purpose in the world (Province of British Columbia 2017).
